Valentine’s Day flowers in Barcelona

What it is
14 February works in Spain much as it does elsewhere: flowers, dinner, a card. It is called San Valentin, and it is a couples’ day rather than the wider friends-and-family affair it becomes in some countries.
Worth knowing if you are sending from abroad: in Catalonia the bigger romantic date is Sant Jordi, on 23 April. Many people here mark both.
What people send
Red roses are what most people send. A dozen is the standard gesture. If you would rather not send the obvious thing, a mixed bouquet in warm colours does the same job and lasts as well.

Order early. 14 February is one of the two days a year when we sell out of the popular arrangements, and the slot you choose becomes a guide rather than a promise.
